Best Practice Name: Heritage Fishery (Annie Battle Lake)
Overview Contact Links Print this BP    Email this BP
Situation:
Annie Battle Lake is a 335 acre lake with little lakeshore development located entirely in Glendalough State Park. Lake had a healthy population of large panfish. Numerous other lakes in area offer motorized recreation. Lake was threatened by heavy fishing pressure when property became a park with public access which would destroy a unique fishing opportunity.

Approach:
Lake was closed for 4 years to allow fish populations to recover. Lake reopened with following restrictions: no motors (not even electric), no electronic devices / fish finders, catch-and-release only for bass and northern, sunfish limit of 5. Crappie limit of 5 with an 11" minimum size was added 5 years later by public request.

Outcome:
Lake has become a destination due to the quiet, back-to-the-past fishing experience. Population of large sunnies and crappies has been maintained and size and number of extremely large bass has increased. Northern pike sizes are increasing slowly. 99% positive response from public. Excellent boat/canoe/kayak rental revenue is received at park. Lake water quality is superb.
